Experimental Sound Design: die Arbeit von Diego Stocco

Vor kurzem stieß ich bei den Blogpiloten auf jenes sehenswerte Video voller ungewöhnlicher Sounds:

Der Macher Diego Stocco ist Italiener, lebt allerdings in Kalifornien. Er bezeichnet sich selbst als Sound Designer und hat für das Stück wirklich nichts anderes benutzt als Sand:

I emphasized the inner notes of the sand grains and mapped them on a sampler as a series of instruments. The grooves are all played live with various techniques, including taping two piezo films to my fingers. (Diego Stocco über sein Stück “Music From Sand”)

In einem lesenswerten Interview erläutert Diego Stocco seinen Ansatz: er sei auf der Suche nach “unique sounds never heard before”  und setze dafür auch schon mal ein Klavier in Brand. Gänsehaut-Musik mit ungewöhnlichen Instrumenten.

One day, tired of seeing it sitting there doing nothing, I had the idea to sample it while it was on fire in order to create a long lasting “last performance.” Although I had mixed feelings about doing it, I was very curious to hear how it would sound while burning. I was scared to burn the trees around the piano and a little sad knowing that it would be gone forever. All of the sounds you hear in the video were from the piano.
